What a Fractional CTO Costs in Canada

Russ AlexanderAugust 27, 20263 min read

Most Canadian fractional CTO engagements are priced as a monthly retainer, not an hourly rate. The number depends mainly on two things: how many days a week the person is engaged, and how senior the role needs to be. The ranges below are figures reported in the market, not what Datarex charges.

What actually drives the number

Three factors move the price more than anything else.

Days per week. A one-day-a-week advisory retainer costs a fraction of a three-day-a-week embedded arrangement, because you're buying time, not a title.

Seniority and scope. A fractional CTO who has run engineering at scale and can walk into a board meeting costs more than someone doing pure architecture review. Scope matters too: someone setting technology direction and managing vendor relationships costs more than someone reviewing a single system.

Industry and risk profile. A company handling regulated data or preparing for an audit needs someone who has done that before, and that experience carries a premium over general-purpose technical advice.

None of these are about the company's size on paper. A 15-person company mid-acquisition can justify a bigger retainer than a 60-person company with a stable, low-risk stack.

Location plays a smaller role than it used to. Fractional work is largely remote, so a Toronto company and a company in a smaller market often pay similar rates for similar scope. What varies more is the sector: companies in regulated industries or those handling sensitive data tend to pay toward the higher end regardless of headcount, because the person needs domain experience on top of general technical judgment.

What the market reports

Canadian pricing guides put fractional CTO retainers in a wide band. A 2026 pricing guide from Reyem Technologies, a fractional CTO consultancy, puts Canadian retainers at roughly $3,000 to $7,000 a month for advisory-level engagements (10 to 20 hours a week), rising to $15,000 to $25,000 a month for a heavily embedded role (40-plus hours a week). For comparison, Talent.com's 2026 Canadian salary data, based on 525 reported salaries, puts the average full-time CTO salary at $126,750 a year, with experienced hires reaching upward of $216,000 before benefits, equity, and the cost of a bad hire. A fractional arrangement at even the high end of the retainer range costs less annually than a full-time senior hire, because you're not paying for a full week when you only need a few days of senior judgment.

How Datarex prices it

Datarex doesn't publish flat rates for fractional CTO work, because the driving factors above vary too much from one company to the next. What's fixed is the shape of the engagement: a monthly retainer with a minimum of one day a week, scoped to what your company actually needs, with a written proposal before anything starts. See how the fractional CTO service is structured, or check the pricing page for how this fits alongside Datarex's other engagement types.

If you're not sure whether a retainer or a fixed piece of work fits better, that's the first conversation, not something you need to figure out on your own.
